| Surfing in Ecuador |
Although Ecuador is a relatively small country in South America, it offers many possibilities for surfers. On the Galapagos Islands and on the coast you will find different, varied surf spots. The height of the waves are diverse and the conditions are great for beginners as well. But advanced and expert surfers don't have to renounce good waves and they will find beaches for a great surf experience. You can surf the whole year in Ecuador but the months from November to January are the best. Some well known places are Montañita, San Matero, Rio Chico y Ayampe. The little city Montañita in the province of Guayas, is known as the surf center of Ecuador and surfers come from the whole world to the little metropolis. The village has many bars, restaurants, travel agencies and offers also other services to affordable prices. In the coast city Salinas there are often national and international surf competitions. An other, popular surf destination is the small village Canoa, which is a little further in northern direction. Boards can be hired in many places and in the dry season you should also take a wetsuit with you because the water can become very cold.
