Climate and travel season of Ecuador |
You can visit Ecuador all through the year, but each season has its advantages, depending on what you are planning to do. From July to September, and December to January there are most foreign tourists visiting Ecuador. The temperatures are different in the diverse altitudes. In the Highland it can be really cold, with snowstorms on the mountain summits. And at the same time, in Guayaquil, the tropical heat is so hard to bear that only an air- conditioned room can help you out. On the Peninsula St. Elena, in the Pacific Ocean, also the cold Humboldt current plays an important role. But in general, there are no notable variations in temperature all through the year, accordingly it is not appropriate to talk about seasons like on the northern hemisphere. The rainy season on the Galapagos Islands, on the coast and in the highland, lasts from the end of January to the beginning of May.
In the Amazon region, which is hot and humid, June, July and August are the months with highest rainfall, even if the real rainy season already starts in February. Inundations and landslides are often the consequences.
A high degree of humidity there is all year round. In the Amazon region, the year's average magnitude of rainfall is the highest in Ecuador. Sometimes over 5000mm.
In the Highland, the most beautiful months are June to September, when the equatorial sun shines the whole day. A headgear protects you during these months from dangerous sunburns. Between October and January you can find the most intensive hours of sunshine in the afternoon. In November, there are often heavy rainfalls or even hail adjourning the summer feeling and resembling an early onset of winter. Between January and the end of May there is the highest rainfall. Bad weather in April can cause a bad mood and you easily forget that you are in tropical South America. To understand the confusing weather in the Highland, there is a commonly known rule of thumb: Spring in the morning, Summer on noonday, Autumn and rain in the afternoon, and finally smooth Winter nights with temperatures around 5 ° C. In reaches over 4000m snowfall is not unusual.
On the coast, the rainy season lasts from the end of January to the beginning of May. The temperatures arise and the fast increase of mosquitoes and other teasers is the result. In the northern, hot and humid coast region Esmeraldas, there's rainfall at nights and heavy insolation around lunchtime. The Summer months from June to December may be much dryer, but the sky is often clouded in the mornings. In the southern, hot and dry coast region, the months July, August and September can be relatively cool and you should take a thin coat with you. Permanent drizzle and clouded sky for one week could remind you of the North Sea if there wouldn't be the cactuses and the Ceibo trees. In Salinas, the temperatures which are usually hot and dry, can fall in this season down to 12 ° C. December and January bring usually more sunny days and a long lasting tan.
